The Cyclone Phethai left a track of destruction on Monday inparts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh hitting the normal life, disrupting power supply and road, rail and air transport but the state government was alert of the cyclone which minimised the loss to human and animal life.
One person lost his life in a cyclone related incident in Vijayawada due to a landslide after a heavy downpour on Sunday night. The chilly weather and the temperature fall led to the deaths of at least eight people where hypothermia was suspected cause, six of these deaths were confirmed two each from West Godavari and East Godavari and one each from Prakasam and Visakhapatnam.
Cyclone Phethai crossed the coast at katrenikona in East Godavari district on Monday afternoon with the wind speeds of up to 80kmph.Agriculture and horticulture crops spread over 11,000 hectare are damaged in Krishna, East and West Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Guntur.
Few parts of Konaseema and East Godavari bore the brunt of phethai’s fury. Streams were full and copious inflows expected into the Krishna River. Authorities released water into the sea from Prakasam barrage in Vijaywada.
Traffic on the national highways passing through the coastal districts came to a halt due to falling trees and damage to the roads. Many trains were either diverted or cancelled.
